Google has issued an unprecedented threat to stop offering search engine services due to the implementation of new laws.
The law obliges Google to pay news content providers whose articles and posts are used by the Google search engine and displayed in the relevant results.
Google knew about the intentions of the Australian legislator for some time and had been engaged in some lobbying to overturn the implementation of legislation, to no avail.
The Australian Prime Minister's response was immediate and resounding, saying that the Government was not responding to threats such as the shutdown of the search engine in Australia.
According to the logic of the legislator, however, the operation of Google and Facebook creates several problems in terms of competition with online news providers, which translates into a reduction in revenue for them.
Facebook, which is also targeted by the legislation, has made similar threats to Google. It's worth watching the issue in Australia, as it opens up a wide range of discussions for the distribution and control of content on the Internet.
